ABOUT CHRIS
Chris Sare is committed to helping children grow up healthy. She has been in the forefront of the children's nutrition revolution, with a website, ChrisSare4Kids.com, and a children's storybook that make learning about nutrition fun. Chris's entertaining approach helps children embrace the healthy lifestyle at a young age. Along with its whimsical characters, Chris's website is unique in also providing practical advice for parents and lesson plans for teachers.
Chris started her children's website in 2005. She knew that the younger children were when they learned about nutrition, the better. "Many people do not understand basic nutrition," says Chris, "They don't know what gives them energy, what builds muscles, or what nutrients help the brain to function. If parents do not understand this, how can we expect our children and grandchildren to understand? I grew up eating unhealthy foods and did not have the awareness or support. Consequently I grew up very overweight with low self-esteem, along with poor eating habits. As a result, it is my passion to help children at a very young age. Prevention is key, and if children can learn while they are young, they will have lifelong habits that are engrained. We are all creatures of habit and the better habits and more tools we have, the healthier we can be," she believes.
After the birth of her grandson in 2007, Chris wrote her first children's book. She wanted it to be a book for families, teachers and caregivers to read and enjoy. She uses interesting ways to teach children what they need to know. Once the children know this information, they can pass it along to siblings and parents and carry it with them as they grow, one day to pass this vital information along to the next generation. Teaching proper nutrition, like reading, spelling or math, is best if planted as a seed that is allowed to grow with the child, instead of trying to teach it after habits are formed.
Today Chris is more determined than ever to help prevent childhood obesity. She has joined First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! initiative to fight childhood obesity. She is working, along with many others, to make a difference for the next generation. "It is a dream come true to be doing something I feel so passionate about," she says. "I feel very fortunate and hope my website, books and lesson plans empower all families to become healthier together." With Chris's approach, good nutrition and good health are good fun.
